Spraying your first board is like taking an art class; in your mind you can see what it’s meant to look like but in reality it just not the same. Luckily we know a guy with long flowing locks on his head, canvas like soft brown complexion and a generally over active imagination, who rides some of the sweetest fishy looking boards around the Cape.
He gave us some insight into how he gets his ideas to come to life. Grab your polarized sunnies ‘coz these colours don’t quite blend in bro!
Onto the D.U.I - sorry, the D.I.Y checklist
- A wacky design and colour scheme - check.
- Some spray cans from your local hardware store - check.
- Maybe a spray gun would be a good idea… yaaaa… - check.
- Some tape to cover your decals - check.
- And lastly some dishwashing liquid!
You might be getting a little worried at this stage, don’t panic we’re not into drugs or driving under the influence…
Spraying it PART ONE
First things first, you’ve got to find a spot where there’s no wind and nothing that can get spray on it - like your pimped up cabbie!!!
Obviously make sure the surface area of your board is clean, clean, clean because you don’t want crap getting stuck under the spray causing unevenness. Also tape up your decals to keep your shapers name emblazoned on your stick!
A good idea is to check the spray nozzle for correct flow before taking it over your board so find yourself a nice white wall, give the can a shake and have a few practice runs making sure you get the angle of the dangle right.
In this case we coated the entire base layer in a groovy sunshine yellow - starting at one end of the board and keeping a consistent pressure on the nozzle and steady speed while spraying. Rather spray too thin a layer than too much as the liquid may run which looks K.A.K.
Once the base layer has dried up (which shouldn’t take longer than about an hour) we applied the dish washing liquid in a freakish pattern along the rail where we wanted the board to remain yellow.
From there we straight away sprayed the orange layer over and around the dish washing liquid! By now this was looking PRO baby!
Once that was all done we hit the surf for a couple of hours while the second layer was drying. This took about 2-3 hours.
Spraying it PART TWO
Once it dried we took to the garden to get a hose and trickled some water over the board and gently rubbed the dishwashing liquid off using a sponge Bob.
At this point we realized we forgot some stuff, so back to the shops for some clear lacquer and water paper! NOTE TO SELF… make a check-list first!
The last layer you do after drying the water off. Apply a coat of clear lacquer spray to protect your design. Again the same concepts apply. Keep it slow and steady.
If you do find spots where the spray went for a run, you can fix it up to a certain extent by using the finest grain water paper, wetting it and very gently sanding down the patchy area’s.
And voila! You are now officially pimped out!!!!!
