After having watched “Kaleidoscope” I started thinking about all the surfers and their families that I have known over the years. Each and every person was unique.
We’re a global community made up of many individuals who cover a broad spectrum of philosophies, personalities and attitudes. However, any which way you look at it, we’re all really the same. We share a common love of the ocean, we have salt in our blood, and we form a tribe called “Surf”…
Let me tell you a little more about our tribe…
For starters we’re globally dispersed: a surfer from China is the same as a surfer in Chilli. No matter where you’re from or where you’re going, all you need to be a surfer is a wave, even if the wave is on Lake Michigan.
Secondly we speak our own language; sure there are many different dialects, but a “dude”, “bra”, “boet”, “guy” and “china” are still the same thing! I’m sure anybody who doesn’t surf and overhears a group of surfers talking will be shaking their heads with confusion in no time… Just read “Water, Wax & Wood” if you don’t believe me.
Thirdly, the dynamics of the tribe revolve around a single commodity; you guessed it – we trade in waves! Here too we have different currencies. Every break on the planet offers a unique exchange, locals make a fortune like stock brokers and surf reporters try their hand at futures trading – but one things for sure, we never have enough currency!
Characteristic four is our tribal attire. While we’re away from the ocean we may try to camouflage ourselves in business suits, designer labels, tie-dye sarongs or tatty threads, but when you’re heading for the ocean you’re gonna be wearing something like board shorts, a t-shirt, slip slops and a wetsuit.
Furthermore our tribe shares unique markings, and those Maoris thought they were the only ones… Our ones aren’t quite as extreme but are just as easily recognizable.
In warm water climates just look for the most tanned person in the crowd, inspect their legs around the ankle area and if the tan isn’t even then you know they use a leash.
The same is true in colder water climates. The signs are tanned heads, hands and feet, with unsightly scabs along the neck, inner arms and behind the knees – proof positive that they been chaffed by a wetsuit!
Well there you have it my brother, my sister, yet another dose of soul food for thought. I haven’t mentioned fighting between tribal factions on purpose, I’ll leave that up to you to sort out but will say this:
Charity begins at home and we all live in the same ocean…
