Clint Stevens recently took a stroll down the beach with Austin Rodney, a long time surfer, father and all round good guy, these are their words.
What got you into surfing? Rumor has it you were a lifeguard…
As a 14/15 year old, I spent days on the beach watching the surf and a single fin short board (belonging to a friend) doing nothing in particular. This prompted me to try surfing.
So you've been at it for a while?
Surfing for almost 30 years, in the earlier days, more off than on due to transport and beach availability hassles (politics).
Where do you normally surf and with whom?
Cemetery, 9 Miles and Muizenberg. These days generally who ever is there, close friends.
You're quite popular with the grom’s, any reason why you like surfing with them?
They are easy to get along with and due to my age they bring out the paternal instincts in me.
You always seem to be on it when it's good. How do you manage that?
Probably due to a clean living lifestyle and a quest to remain in good shape.
What do you do for a living - people wanna know…
I am a full-time qualified petrol attendant and that’s why I’m always surfing at odd hours - somewhat of a manager if you will.
You used to cruise in a white kombi and take us lighties surfing, any experiences that stand out?
Having 10-15 passengers and boards in the van and not falling foul of the pigs! Always having a crowd along no matter how remote the spot ( Mnandi Beach/Garbage etc).
Your favorite ride?
Actually it’s the board in Clint’s room. It has serious potential, but it doesn't benefit me or anyone in particular, gathering dust on the wall. * We know what you mean, Clint has way too many of those - Mister M.
What does surfing mean to you?
Second only to my love for God, it is not merely a sport or hobby, it is a way of life that can stimulate ones appreciation of nature, the earth and even a creator. Also a superb stress reliever!
Any closing comments?
Thank you for allowing me the privilege of putting some of my endearing thoughts regarding surfing to paper.
And we thank you Austin for taking the time to speak to us, best of luck for the future and it's good to still see you ripping the line up!
