There’s nothing quite like a surf trip to get your heart and mind pumping. Your imagination drops the clutch and kicks into overdrive. All the possibilities clog up your stream of consciousness. Your stomach contents mimic the proverbial “butterfly whose fluttering sparks a storm a continent away”.
Living in Cape Town, most people prefer a trip up the “Weskus”. Now don’t get me wrong – the West Coast is great – but can be summed up in a few words: “Cold water, blazing hot sun, weekend crowds, and sand, lots and lots of sand”. Plus I’ve had enough lefts to last me a lifetime, ok maybe not, but some rights would make a welcome change!
So I played the old “East vs. West Coast” game, you know the whole “Biggie vs. Tupac” debacle. I contorted my fingers into childish depictions of “W” and “E” and rapped the few lines of an old Biggie Smalls track I still remember: “Biggie, Biggie, Biggie, can’t you see? Sometimes your words just hypnotise me!”
I think they got the message… the outcome? East Coast klapped the snot outta West… Mossel Bay was to be our destination!
Aah, good old Mossels! Warm water, beautiful climate, friendly locals and an excellent campsite, what more can you ask for? How about two world-class rights within paddling distance of each other, one works on low and the other works on high tide. Perfect! Being the “Oupa” of the trip, I knew exactly what to expect… it made no difference at all; I was still as stoked as a kitten in a canned fish store.
I always seem to be behind the wheel and it was such a pleasure to be able to relax on the back seat and get to our destination ready to surf. If I had to rate Mossel Bay I’d go with a definite 7 out of 10. The only drawbacks both start with “L” - lack of variety and the lurkers (sharks).
I arrived in Mossel Bay on a surf trip for the first time. After a four hour drive from Cape Town I was really amped to get in the water. The break wasn’t quite what I was expecting; the picture in my mind was a little different…
All in all I'd say it was a good trip and Mossel Bay hardly fails to deliver. If you don't mind a fog-horn pulsing every two minutes and the very real possibility of spotting a shark then Mossel's is a viable destination for a weekend.
